Counselling Therapy/Psychotherapy

Low-Cost Counselling

This clinician is a graduate-level student completing supervised clinical hours toward their professional designation (e.g., Social Work, Counselling Therapy, etc.). They provide therapy under the supervision of a licensed clinician and participate in ongoing training, supervision, and evaluation to ensure high-quality, ethical care.

My name is Steven Butler, commonly known as “The Big Friendly Therapist”. I am a Licensed Counselling Therapist (LCT) with the College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of NB (CCTNB) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

My passion lies with working closely with young adults (16 and above) and adults in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community - providing gender affirming care. I also am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a structured therapy that encouraged client to work through their trauma by using bi-lateral stimulation. I use an integrative, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, drawing from person-centred and humanistic frameworks, queer theory, and evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and affirmative therapy.

I work with folks who are wanting to work through anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, open relationships, life transitions, gender identity and sexual orientation exploration, and relationship struggles (I currently do not offer couples counselling). I work at being anti-racist, affirmative, all the while being non-judgemental.

Together, we will work collaboratively to identify your goals, build on your strengths, and develop meaningful strategies to manage stress. Our work will focus on exploring healthy coping skills and habits that support your overall well-being and mental health as we move through the therapeutic process. I believe that a strong, trusting connection between therapist and client is key to meaningful and lasting change.

As a Master of Social Work, Registered Social Worker (RSW), I am pleased to offer supportive counselling services through The Therapy Collective, both in person in the Uptown Saint John area and virtually across New Brunswick. My approach is grounded in an anti-oppressive, person-centred, and trauma-informed lens.

I bring several years of experience from the frontline, including roles focused on family health and safety and with women navigating addiction and recovery. These experiences have deepened my understanding of complex trauma, family systems, and the importance of accessible, compassionate care. Feel free to reach out if you think we might be a good fit.
